Our Vision: To be the nationally recognized voice for the public interest, states and territories on aviation and the national aviation system.

The Senate recently passed a bill that requires all meteorological evaluation towers (MET) to be painted entirely and registered with the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission. Several accidents have occurred with low-flying aircraft colliding with these unmarked, or inadequately marked, towers. The bill now requires that MET towers 50 feet or taller be completely painted in alternating bands of orange and white. Currently, as you know, the FAA has no jurisdiction on towers in remote areas that are less than 200 feet tall, meaning of course, that individual states must pursue the legislation. This bill can be used as a template for other states who also seek improved safety for low-flying aircraft. Victor Bird (Oklahoma) said, “This bill will make the Oklahoma skies safer for all the flying public, but particularly for agricultural sprayers. It is a good and reasonable step for all interests affected by the legislation.” The Governor is expected to sign the bill.
