FAA Deputy Administrator, Michael Whitaker used a speech to industry leaders attending the NextGen Institute’s Annual Public Meeting to announce that the FAA will hold a “Call to Action” summit to engage the aviation industry in meeting the January 1, 2020 deadline to equip aircraft with new avionics technology. Whitaker stressed several times that the 2020 deadline will be met. The all-day session will be held onOctober 28. Also speaking during the morning-long meeting was Edward L. Bolton, Jr., the FAA’s Assistant Administrator for NextGen and an industry panel moderated by Marion Blakey, President of the Aerospace Industries Association, which included Pete Bunce, President of GAMA, Lillian Ryals with MITRE, Dr. Jaiwon Shin, NASA and Nancy Graham, ICAO. General Marke “Hoot” Gibson provided closing remarks. NASAO is one of the most senior aviation organizations in the United States, predating even the Federal Aviation Administration’s predecessor, the Civil Aeronautics Authority. The states first established NASAO to ensure uniformity of safety measures, to standardize airport regulations and develop a truly national air transportation system responsive to local, state, and regional needs. NASAO holds two formal conferences each year – our Annual Convention and Trade Show, typically held in September and a Washington Legislative Conference held in the nation’s Capital during the February/March timeframe. NASAO also has a presence at EAA’s AirVenture, held each year in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in late July.
