Arkansas Governor, Asa Hutchinson has appointed Jerry Chism as Director of the Arkansas Department of Aeronautics.

Chism, who has been acting Director since John Knights retirement last year, said he is very excited to continue serving Arkansas aviators and working with his friends at NASAO in the future. “I have had the privilege of working with the Department of Aeronautics for the past 11 years and I am honored that Governor Hutchinson has chosen to appoint me as Director.”

Chism, a native Arkansan, said he looks forward to working with pilots and airports statewide as they continue to improve aviation in Arkansas. A life-long interest in aviation led Chism to begin flying lessons shortly after graduating from college and flying soon became an addiction. In January 2004, he was able to turn his hobby into a career when he joined the Arkansas Department of Aeronautics as Assistant Director.

Jerry is a Multi-engine, instrument rated Commercial Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor and flies the Department’s Beechcraft A36 Bonanza. In 1982, Jerry married his High School sweetheart, Kelly and they have three children. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1984 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree and practiced architecture for 20 years with 10 years as partner in his own firm.

The states first established NASAO to ensure uniformity of safety measures, to standardize airport regulations and develop a truly national air transportation system responsive to local, state, and regional needs.
