Our Vision: To be the nationally recognized voice for the public interest, states and territories on aviation and the national aviation system.

This week I was privileged to attend an event marking the release of a critical new study, funded by NASAO along with other key aviation groups, detailing the economic impact of general aviation in this country.  The study was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, and found that general aviation supports 1.1 million jobs in this country and supplies $219 billion in total economic impact.  This other organizations involved in this effort were the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (who coordinated it), the Aircraft Electronics Association, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association, Helicopter Association International, the National Air Transportation Association and the National Business Aviation Association.  The study was released in a well attended event at the Newseum in Washington.

Information on this study has been sent to the membership and will be put onto our website.  Together with today’s release of our reauthorization white paper, this kind of information can play a critical role in convincing policy makers and thought leaders of the importance of our issues, and of general aviation.  You have seen in recent years the challenges caused by a lack of understanding among decision makers and opinion shapers about general aviation.  This is an important step in correcting that problem.  Interestingly, the economic impact number jumped substantially since the last study a decade ago, even with the intervening Great Recession.  Clearly, general aviation plays an important, and growing, role in our economy.

Please feel free to use the information in the study when talking to your elected officials and others.  If you have state or local studies along the same lines, please share them with us.  This kind of information is our best weapon in the fight to enact strong policies that support a great aviation system.

NASAO is one of the most senior aviation organizations in the United States, predating even the Federal Aviation Administration’s predecessor, the Civil Aeronautics Authority. The states first established NASAO to ensure uniformity of safety measures, to standardize airport regulations and develop a truly national air transportation system responsive to local, state, and regional needs. NASAO holds two formal conferences each year – our Annual Convention and Trade Show, typically held in September and a Washington Legislative Conference held in the nation’s Capital during the February/March timeframe.
