Our Vision: To be the nationally recognized voice for the public interest, states and territories on aviation and the national aviation system.

GregRecently, NASAO held its Washington conference in conjunction with the AASHTO legislative meeting. We met with key FAA and NTSB officials, staff from Capitol Hill who will be critical to the drafting of FAA reauthorization, representatives of important aviation associations with whom we share interests, including AOPA, RAA and ACI-NA. We sat down with the aviation beat writer for The Hill newspaper and had a terrific session with the new President of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) to hear his vision and plans and discuss how we can work together.  The evening prior to the NASAO conference, Carol Comer and I attended a briefing and reception on Capitol Hill to discuss the priorities of the Airports United Coalition, of which NASAO is a member.  In short, it was a very full three days.

As important as it is for NASAO as an organization (and me as NASAO President) to be visible in such settings, it was even more important for those key people to see the NASAO members in attendance.  It is one thing for me to tell them that NASAO represents the public interest in aviation; it is another thing – and much more effective – to do so backed by so many of you. The members of NASAO are our best messengers and every chance we get to discuss our legislative priorities and our vision for the future we should do just that.  Whether you are on Capitol Hill, in your state Capitol or anywhere else, we all need to take every opportunity to hit on our messages.  We had pretty good participation this year at our Washington conference, next year I am sure we will do even better!

On the last day of the conference the NASAO board and staff held a strategic planning session. As we move toward finalizing our plans, we will be in touch with our members so you can see where we are headed and how we plan to get there. It is an exciting time for NASAO and it will be seen as a good time if we are all working together.

NASAO is one of the most senior aviation organizations in the United States, predating even the Federal Aviation Administration’s predecessor, the Civil Aeronautics Authority. The states first established NASAO to ensure uniformity of safety measures, to standardize airport regulations and develop a truly national air transportation system responsive to local, state, and regional needs. NASAO holds two formal conferences each year – our Annual Convention and Trade Show, typically held in September and a Washington Legislative Conference held in the nation’s Capital during the February/March timeframe. NASAO also has a presence at EAA’s AirVenture, held each year in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in late July.
