Our Vision: To be the nationally recognized voice for the public interest, states and territories on aviation and the national aviation system.

The FAA on Tuesday presented a two-hour webinar for airport owners and sponsors, entitled Airports GIS Surface Analysis and Visualization (20:1) tool, presented by the Office of Airports (ARP) at FAA Headquarters in Washington DC. ARP, along with its partners in ATO, released the tool nationwide for use in all FAA Service Centers.

The tool supports a completely automated 20:1 visual surface review process, providing notifications to FAA and airport personnel of possible penetrations at specified airports, and provides a streamlined mitigation workflow throughout the entire process. The automation will enable any airport to use the tool to regularly review a runway end for penetration based on the FAA’s obstacle database, however, surveys would still be required periodically for vegetation grow, to verify new obstacles, or to account for modifications to the airport/airspace. This tool can be used NAS wide by every Owner/Sponsor.

Andrew Goldsmith, the FAA’s point of contact, demonstrated the functionality of the tool during the webinar, which was recorded for future training and review. Goldsmith said that other webinars are being planned for those that were not able to participate this week. The Airports GIS Help Desk number is 1-844-357-2447.
