NASAO Commends Principles of UAS Integration Pilot Program

On Wednesday the White House issued a Presidential Memorandum directing the Secretary of Transportation to establish an Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration Pilot Program to test advanced drone operations in partnership with state and local governments in select jurisdictions.

NASAO commends the White House for moving forward with a directive that acknowledges state, local, and tribal authority in regulating drones. This initiative is certainly a step in the right direction toward adopting a system of cooperative federalism, a model NASAO has consistently supported.

NASAO is pleased that some of the guiding principles of the Drone Federalism Act and the Drone Innovation Act were included in the Presidential Memorandum, and we urge Congress to take further action to clarify the appropriate roles of federal, state and local governments.

We are excited about the opportunities this Presidential Memorandum presents and look forward to continuing to work alongside the White House and Secretary Chao to implement their directives.

NASAO is one of the most senior aviation organizations in the United States, predating even the Federal Aviation Administration’s predecessor, the Civil Aeronautics Authority. The states first established NASAO to ensure uniformity of safety measures, to standardize airport regulations and develop a truly national air transportation system responsive to local, state, and regional needs.
