Our Vision: To be the nationally recognized voice for the public interest, states and territories on aviation and the national aviation system.

Stephens Named Chair of NASAO UAS Committee

James Stephens

James Stephens, Executive Director of the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission has been selected to serve as Chair of the National Association of State Aviation Officials’ (NASAO) UAS Committee.

“I am thrilled to be a part of this,” said Stephens. “I envision the Committee role to be a collective voice for states regarding the safe integration of UAS into the NAS, and for the overall advancement of aviation and aerospace in the US. I’m excited because this sector of the aviation industry has experienced growth like no other, and this growth is bringing opportunities for each of our respective states.”

Stephens pointed out that the opportunities from growth are areas in which we can engage others to become more aware of the roles that aviation plays within our national and state economies and infrastructure programs.  “Ultimately, this committee is dealing with much of what the future of aviation will include,” said Stephens.

Stephens will be taking the helm of the Committee this month, as the long-time Chair, Randy Burdette (VA), retired from state service this month. “We greatly appreciate Randy’s unwavering commitment and dedication as the Chair of this important Committee,” said NASAO President Mark Kimberling. “Working with James, we will continue to strive to ensure that all of our member states have a voice and the opportunity to actively participate and shape UAS policy through our proverbial seat at the table at the national level on UAS integration.”

NASAO will also be unveiling new online communications tools in 2018 to foster active communication among committee members. “These new tools will be invaluable in facilitating more regular dialogue among the states on key issues to be addressed by this and other committees,” added Kimberling.

The states first established NASAO to ensure uniformity of safety measures, to standardize airport regulations and develop a truly national air transportation system responsive to local, state, and regional needs.
